'Roid Week 2009 & A Sale!

It's time! This week--2-6 November 2009--is 'Roid Week 2009! It's a biannual Flickr event that celebrates all things instant photography! Everyone may upload up to three new-to-Flickr polaroids per day. It's so fun to see all of the new instant classics uploaded to the pool!

Here's a sneak peak of what I'll be uploading on the first day; I shot these photos of my doggies last weekend as they luxuriated in a hotel, using my Polaroid SX-70 and some sweet 779 film.

And now to the sale! Now through Friday, 6 November, I'll be celebrating 'Roid Week with a Sale in my Etsy shop! Buy any Polaroid print in my shop, get another of equal or lesser value free! Just mention "Roid Week" at checkout in the comments to the seller, and I'll send you a free print!

And, if you ever want a print from my portfolio that isn't in my shop, just ask and I'll make it available!

A Star!

Sometimes you meet a star, and you don't even know it! In February 2008, I traveled to the beautiful city of Lisbon (Lisboa) in Portugal, and I took this photo of a dog in his window:

Camera: Lomo LC-A
Film: Kodak Ektachrome/Cross Processed

Well, imagine my delight when I discovered this fun photo of the same dog, in the same window, while glancing through Flickr's Explore this morning!

'Roid Week 2009!

For those of you who love Polaroids and love Flickr, you may already know that it's now 'Roid Week 2009! To start the week off, here are two photos I took this past weekend that I really, really love, using my beloved SX-70 camera and expired Time-Zero film!

Signed prints available in my Etsy shop!

A Succulent in a Cup
I got this beautiful mug in Jerusalem from my favorite potters over ten years ago. Now it has a series of chips, so I repurposed it as a planter for this lovely lotus-esque succulent!

A Blooming Cactus
I'm always in awe of the beautiful blooms that emerge from cacti!

Check in all week with my Flickr stream to see my latest 'Roid week uploads! And get out there and shoot some Polaroid film while you can!

Fascinating photographs of Afghanistan from 1974

As an historian and a photographer, I am always interested in primary documents that emerge from a camera. I just stumbled across a really interesting photo set on Flickr taken by an Australian woman named Wendy Tanner. She shot many gorgeous slides while traveling through Afghanistan in 1974. These startling images reflect elements of life in that country before the Soviet invasion and subsequent (coming up on) thirty years of war suffered by the Afghan people. I can't help but wonder about the people in her photos. What have they experienced since then? Are they still alive? Have they been forced from their homes? It's horrible to imagine, but I am grateful that she posted these primary documents for us to peruse and ponder.

This one may be my favorite. Blue Glass Kabul by Wendy Tanner

the traveling polaroid camera project!

I was very lucky to sign up for the Polaroid Traveling Camera Project  at Flickr. The purpose of this project is to send a camera all over the USA to various Polaroid artists, have them shoot a photo of themselves, and then send it to the next person.  This is my self portrait, shot yesterday morning using the traveling camera--a Polaroid OneStep--and 600 film.

I rarely shoot self portraits, but I do think this one is vernacular-tastic, so here it is! LOL

PS. I'm having a sale at my Etsy shop for everyone reading this blog! Just mention "blogspot" with any purchase at checkout, and I'll send you a surprise 4x6" print!
