Florida is full of water and reptiles. Here are two diptychs of Floridian Landscapes from a recent trip back to the place where I lived between 2001 and 2006. I hope you enjoy them.

What Central Florida Looks Like to Me
This is the St. John's River, which, like the Nile, flows north. Sitting upon the river is this classic "cracker" fishcamp, which serves some good fried gator and cold beer on hot days.

A Floridian Swamp
Want to know what rotting plant matter smells like? Look no further than Florida!
Both diptychs were taken using a Polaroid SX-70 camera and expired Polaroid Artistic TZ film.
It's still 'Roid Week, Day 2 at Flickr! I'd like to share my three submissions for today with you!

I love this crazy image of that crazy New Mexican town of Deming! The sky is always a big antidote to the insanity on the streets below...

I shot this last weekend in Paris, Arkansas...I could not pass this one up!

Oh, Waffle House, how I adore your vision on the mighty American interstates! This old-school establishment may be found in Russellville, Arkansas.
Prints are available in my Etsy shop! And don't forget my sale this week! Click here for more info!
There is nothing like the sky in New Mexico! It's always so big and so breathtaking!

On my drive back home during my recent summertime roadtrip, I stopped at a roadside rest stop in southern Arizona, to take a photo of the beautiful Saguaro cacti that were sprouting up everywhere. Because I know that the desert has all kinds of poisonous snakes and insects, I looked carefully and thought I didn't see any. However, I apparently didn't look carefully enough, because this creature suddenly stood up, hissed, and rattled at me when I got close to him, on my approach toward a cactus!

Mojave Rattlesnake (detail) (2009)
Location: Sacaton, Arizona
Camera: Olympus e-300 Digital SLR
EEEEK!!! I jumped and shrieked, then went back to my car to get the longest-lens camera I had on me. It was only 150mm, but it did the trick and I got the above photo! He was already curled back up, but that was fine by me! I have since learned that this was a Mojave Rattlesnake, and that they are the most venomous rattler in North America!
Needless to say, I did NOT get my Saguaro Polaroid photo at that stop! I kept driving, and eventually, by the time I got to the lovely Picacho Peak turnoff, I felt secure enough to try again. This is my resulting diptych, taken safely from the paved road!

Moral of this story? Don't assume there are no poisonous creatures near you in the desert, just because you cannot see them! Fortunately, rattlesnakes give you a loud warning!
Today I went to Fort Worth, and what did I find? A rare creature...the iconic Jackalope! It was an extremely hot day, but that didn't seem to deter this mighty animal (not quite a rabbit and not quite an antelope) from surveying his terrain! I just had to share these images right away...it's not every day you can get a Jackalope to pose for a photo!

My dogs are two of my favorite photographic subjects. My whippet, Laika, is a beautiful model; she is sculptured, elegant, and gorgeous. My terrier, Orson, is cuddly, adorable, and spunky. They are both photogenic in their own ways, and, while my love for them prejudices me to think their photos are always fabulous, I do really love to share my photos of them.
This past week, I was lucky enough to get two photos of them that seem to go together perfectly, even though I took them a week or so apart. Last week, I shot this photo of Laika on our new living room chair, a beautiful chive green anson chair from Room and Board. I love its low light and subtle textures.

Today, however, I shot this photo of Orson on the new chair. A rainy day light made his portrait eerily similar to the one I took of Laika.

Yes, my dogs get on the furniture, even if it's new. :)

Oh my, I have been so neglectful of my blog as of late! The primary reason has been that my summer has been so very busy! Trips to Colorado (for work), Minnesota (work and play), and California (play and work) kept me very busy! And now the new university term has begun. In case you don't know, I'm a professor at the University of North Texas, so my schedule gets really busy in September. To top it off, I've fallen a bit behind in some writing duties, so I'm still playing a bit of catchup!
However, I've been finding a bit of time here and there to play with my batches of Polaroid Artistic TZ film! I wanted to post this particular photo today to encourage everyone out there to consider replacing your loud and polluting gas and electric lawn mowers with an awesome push mower! My husband and I got this gorgeous retro-and-wonderful, truly analog push mower some months ago, and our lawn looks great! Just think: you'll get some exercise, won't pollute, and have some mulch at the end of your lawn mowing session! It's getting easier and easier to be green, and small steps really add up!
